Uttarakhand Minister’s Husband Faces Backlash Over Bihar Marriage Comments

A political controversy has emerged following remarks made by Girdhari Lal Sahu, the husband of Uttarakhand Women and Child Welfare Minister Rekha Arya, suggesting that girls from Bihar could be “brought for marriage” for ₹20,000–25,000.

While Sahu has apologized for his comments, the BJP has distanced itself from the statement, emphasizing that he has no official connection with the party.

The Remarks That Sparked Outrage

A video circulating on social media shows Sahu reportedly addressing young men at an event in Almora, saying:
“Will you get married in old age? If you are unable to get married, we will bring a girl for you from Bihar… you can get one there for ₹20,000 to 25,000.”

He was also heard encouraging the audience: “Come with me, we’ll get you married.”

Following widespread backlash, Sahu claimed his words were misinterpreted, stating he was referring to a friend’s marriage. He added:
“If my words have offended or hurt anyone, I apologise with folded hands.”

Political Reactions

The remarks triggered a strong political response:

  • RJD Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav criticized the BJP, saying:
“BJP supporters have always harbored a poisonous mindset towards Bihar and women. After allegedly buying votes for ₹10,000, now they talk about bringing girls for ₹20–25,000.”
  • The Congress party condemned the comments, calling them an insult to women, and demanded a formal apology. State Congress president Ganesh Godiyal stated:
“This statement insults daughters of India, whether from Bihar, Kerala, or Uttarakhand, and highlights the BJP’s disregard for women’s dignity.”
  • Jyoti Rautela, Congress Mahila Morcha state president, added that the remarks were particularly shameful, considering Sahu’s wife oversees the Women and Child Welfare portfolio. She emphasized that such statements promote child marriage, human trafficking, and exploitation of women.

BJP Distances Itself

BJP Uttarakhand media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan condemned the statement, describing it as hateful and unacceptable, and clarified that Sahu is not associated with the party. The BJP also declined to seek any clarification from Minister Rekha Arya regarding her husband’s remarks.
