Comedian and actor Pete Davidson revealed that the viral phrase “big dick energy”, which once dominated pop culture discussions, had a negative impact on his personal and professional life.
Viral Label Became a Source of Embarrassment
The term gained traction during Davidson’s high-profile romance with Kim Kardashian. Although fans and media joked about his unconventional looks, the focus on Davidson supposedly exuding “Big Dick Energy” began in 2018, when his ex-fiance Ariana Grande hinted on social media about his anatomy. Whether accurate or not, the remark sparked a frenzy that stuck with Davidson for years.
Professional and Personal Challenges
On The Breakfast Club podcast, Davidson explained how the label affected his early years on Saturday Night Live (SNL).
“Nobody talked about the work I was doing; they were only focused on this. After a year or two, everyone saw how sad and embarrassed I was,” he said.
He added that the sexualization of his personal life created awkwardness in his dating and professional relationships, despite his attempts to maintain a low profile.
Media Double Standards
Davidson highlighted the double standards in media coverage, noting that female celebrities are rarely subjected to the same scrutiny over their bodies or personal lives. He said:
“If I were a woman, there would be a march for it. People talk about me all day. This was professional and unavoidable.”
Brand Deals and Public Attention
Over the years, brands tried to capitalize on Davidson’s reputation, offering sponsorships like “big dick sandwiches”, which he initially rejected. Earlier this year, he partnered with women’s fashion brand Reformation for a playful campaign as their “Official Boyfriend,” appearing in underwear.
Davidson’s Reflection
For Davidson, being labeled by a viral joke was far from humorous. He emphasized that the attention had nothing to do with his comedy career and instead highlighted the challenges of being defined by a pop culture narrative beyond his control.
