OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced plans to launch its first India office in New Delhi later this year, strengthening its presence in one of its largest global markets.
OpenAI Expands in India
Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and started hiring for its local team, the company confirmed in a statement on Friday.
India is a key growth market for ChatGPT, where the company recently rolled out its cheapest subscription plan at $4.60 per month, targeting nearly one billion internet users in the country.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on India Strategy
“Opening our first office and building a strong local team is a crucial step in our vision to make advanced AI more accessible in India and to develop AI with India and for India,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Rising Popularity of ChatGPT in India
According to OpenAI’s latest data:
- India has the largest student user base of ChatGPT globally.
- Weekly active users in India have grown four times in the past year.
This rapid growth highlights India’s role as one of OpenAI’s most important markets worldwide.
Challenges and Competition in Indian Market
Despite its success, OpenAI faces legal disputes in India. Several news publishers and book authors accuse the company of using their content without permission to train ChatGPT. OpenAI has denied the allegations.
The company also faces tough competition from Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both of which have launched free premium plans to attract Indian users.
Outlook
With its New Delhi office, OpenAI aims to expand operations, improve local partnerships, and drive AI innovation tailored for Indian users.
